Texas Independence Day

To All Masons of Texas:

In an effort to preserve Texas History and promote the strong ties between Masonry and the History of our great State,  the Grand Lodge of Texas History Committee is proud to announce a project in which YOUR lodge may participate; a project that will have a positive effect in your part of the state!

Attached is a sample letter that may be typed on your lodge's letterhead, and addressed to your city's Mayor, City Council, and/or County Judge, asking them to adopt a resolution calling on citizens to celebrate the anniversary of Texas independence, and urging everyone to remember our history, give thanks for the service of our forefathers, and hope that our marvelous inheritance will forever be remembered.   (Also attached is sample of such a resolution that you may provide along with your letter of request)  You should act now and send the letters so there will be plenty of time for the proclamation to be issued.

Texas law (Article 6144a of the Texas Statutes) designates the entire week in which March 2 occurs as “Texas Week” to celebrate Texas Independence Day.  March 2 of every year is designated “Texas Independence Day” - an official state holiday under Section 662.003(b)(2) of the Texas Government Code.

As Texas Masons, we are particularly proud that so many leaders of Texas were members of our fraternity, including Stephen F. Austin, David Crockett,  Juan Sequin, James Bowie, William Barrett Travis, Lorenzo De Zavala,  and many others.  It is also important to note that these Republic of Texas leaders included both Mexican and American Masons who loved liberty.

Thank you for your participation in this project!  We expect it will do much to promote Texas History, Texas Masonry, and the work YOUR lodge does in your community!

For the Grand Lodge of Texas History Committee,
Fraternally,

Dick Brown, Chairman
