PGM Leonard P. Harvey - What I enjoy most about Masonry

Here again, to put into words my real enjoyment of Masonry is a tough assignment. We often quote that “You get out of Masonry what you put into it”. Such might be true is some respects, but it fails to amply describe the real fact which, to me is simply “You put into Masonry what you get out of it”. Or, more specifically, our duty is to pass along our Masonry to those who follow in our footsteps. It is simple logic that to receive something and retain it unto yourself does little for those around you. The very basis of Masonry is the sharing of your experience with others. Masonry is perpetuated by those who live the lessons of Masonry in their own lives and share that with others. Some share such experiences by teaching Masonry to others. That is how we perpetuate Masonry. If we fail to share with others, we have failed those who taught us by word and by their example. In a few words, I enjoy everything about Masonry.

Finally, and indeed – sadly, there are exceptions. Based upon the simple fact of human frailty there is such a thing as disappointments in Masonry as is the case in the non-Masonic world. While there are the ideals of Masonry leading to noble deeds and great achievements, there are also those of our number with feet of clay. To err is human. And, while it is difficult to deal with the distasteful conduct of relatively few Masons, there exists the mechanism by which Masonry deals with such conduct. Therefore, I rejoice that we have provisions for dealing with those who stray from the lessons that Masonry has taught them. Even so, I rejoice because of those who daily practice in their lives the beautiful lessons of Masonry. That’s what I enjoy most about Masonry!
