The
Solemnity of Prayer
Within
the Fraternity one of the most solemn moments occurs during those
times when a Freemason, or candidate, is asked to invoke the blessing
of the Great Architect. Whether openly, or silently, this is a communication
that expresses both our reverence and dependence upon a Supreme Being.
It is through this reverence that Freemasonry begins each undertaking,
and likewise, charges its members to work toward improvement.
At the opening of each meeting the Craft ask for Devine guidance to
work together in peace and with a commitment to order which will bring
harmony to the Lodge. These prayers are to focus the attention of
the Craft to their responsibilities as Freemasons in the Lodge room.
Their purposes are to gain Light, serve one another as Brothers, and
earn the favor of the Great Architect. Seeking guidance from Above
is not to taken lightly for gaining the Light and Knowledge needed
to build a Spiritual Temple is the Mason's greatest challenge and
goal.
At the end of each meeting there are two reminders that all that we
are is known to the All-seeing Eye, and mutual respect toward all
must be a part of our lives. Joined by solemn obligations, each Brother
must spread the cement of Brotherly affection. Both the Chaplin and
the Master charge us to fulfill our obligations as we leave the Lodge
room. The lessons of the Fraternity are our guideposts of conduct,
commitment, and Brotherly love as we seek Light.
Prayer may take the form of an adoration, confession, supplication,
or thanksgiving, but is an address to God in word or idea. Within
the Lodge each candidate, initiate, or Brother is asked to express
his trust in the Great Architect, since the Fraternity requires a
belief in Deity, and when the Lodge Chaplin fulfills his charge "to
point to heaven and lead the way", each Mason must understand
the importance of preparing for the Spiritual World, "where happiness
will be as endless as it is perfect".
Prayer may relief distress, direct our thoughts and deeds, give us
hope, and acknowledge our dependence upon the Great Architect, but
more that that, it binds us as a "Sacred Band", working
to build and serve. It is our voice in the dark seeking the Light.
