MORTON LODGE NO. 72
![]() The building of Morton Masonic Lodge 72 A.F. & A.M. is almost 100 years old and a Recorded Texas Historical Landmark located in the Historical District of Richmond, Texas on Morton Street. The mural "At the Bend of the Brazos" was painted by Adam Miller completed in January of 2005. The mural depicts several historical scenes and artifacts of Richmond Texas. Starting on the right hand side you see the Gillespie Monument built by William Morton in memory of Robert Gillespie a Masonic Brother from a far off land. Above and to the left is the Fort on the Bend from which Fort Bend County takes it name. On the left side of the mural is the "Morton Ferry" which some say is the reason Richmond is located where it is. It was also used by Santa Anna while pursuing Sam Houston and The Texas Army. The stanchions of the ferry are still in the Brazos located a few hundred yards north of the Lodge. This picture was taken January 5, 2005 by Joe Shepherd, now a Past Master of Morton Lodge 72 with a Cannon Sure Shot. |
